Only 15 million paid by Former President. Sirisena for Victims of-Easter Sunday Attacks-

“As a direct result of gross negligence and dereliction of duty, by not preventing an impending major attack and destruction on the Nation and it’s civil population“ as quoted by Sri Lankan special supreme court panel of seven judges investigating the Easter Bombings & Attacks on Sri Lanka,

Former Sri Lankan president Mr. Maithripala Sirisena was found guilty of not taking necessary action on preventing 2019th April 21st suicide bombings and coordinated attacks.

He was found guilty on the 12 th January 2023 with a Sri Lanka supreme court ruling and judgement.

As a result was ordered to pay 100 million Sri Lankan rupees for the victims identified by the courts.

Sri Lankan supreme court ordered former president to pay the ordered compensation with his own Personal funds and was barred from allocating compensations from other external means.

It was not only the former president but also many of the key individuals, ironically appointed by former president him self who were put in charge of country’s security and defense apparatus, were also found guilty with in the same Supreme court Judgement and ruling.

As s result former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former SIS director Nilantha Jayawardhane were ordered to pay Rs. 75 million each as compensation, former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was ordered to pay Rs. 50 million and former National Intelligence chief Sisira Mendis was ordered to pay Rs.10 million within four months from January 12.

As for today, 12th July 2023, is the dead-line date, for the former president to be done with his compensation for the Easter Bombings victims, officially recorded so far, he has only has managed to provide/pay sum of amounting for Rs.15 million for the victims out of Rs 100 million Supreme Court ordered him to pay.

As a result convicted former presiden Mr. Maithripala Sirisena while still being an elected member of the Sri Lankan parliament from Polonnaruwa district has filed an appeal through his lawyers stating that it is not feasible for him to provide the Easter bombings victims with demanded amount of payment within the ordered time duration stating the following circumstances as…

he only receives an income through the pension for his served precedency amounting to Rs.97 500 and another Rs. 54 250 for as parliamentary member’s additional expenditure coverage. Former president rigorously states that he does not possess any sort an assets amounting for 100 million rupees on his name or his family’s name“.

Due to his financial inability of allocating demanded amount for the Easter Bombings victims, through his lawyers former convicted president Mr. Maithripala Sirisena had said he would like to come to an agreement with the supreme court for the remainder of Rs.85 million to be paid by as installments for a duration of 10 years starting from 30th June from the year 2024 to till the year 2033 June 30th. Supreme court yet to decide upon his appeal and new conditions.
