Mandatory Disruption of Water Supply has been initiated…

Due to severe drought country is going through specially due to rain hasn’t been received by major reservoirs that supplies drinking water to countries major populated regions, National Water Supply and Drainage Board has confirmed that they have implemented strict restriction on continual undisrupted water supply for selected regions.

As a result water supply for the regions of Anuradhapura, Plonnnaruwa, Kurunagala regions will be disrupted as scheduled by the board.

Deputy General Manager, Anoja Kaluarachchi said they also have implemented restrictions for regions around Colombo and Gampaha districts as well. But not within these districts them selves. She stated for Colombo and Gampaha districts alone, there are adequate amount water available for the coming two months and the waterboard estimates that would be sufficient enough till with monsoon rainy season reservoirs will receive sufficient amounts of water.

She further added that the water board is already started providing drinking water to these dry regions of the country through their water tankers as well as from the disaster management center’s tankers.

She added according to their estimates  around 54 000 water schemes are already been affected and if the situation doesn’t improve additionally another 55000 water schemes likely to be affected.

She also mentioned waterboard is quite concerned about seawater being flowing back to these reservoirs due lower water levels with in freshwater confinements, and as a result water becoming salty. Water board is taking all necessary measures with available resources to prevent and to minimize this is taking place.

Additionally attending at the media briefing minister of water management Mr. Jeewan Thondaman has also mentioned people should do whatever they can to make efficient use of freshwater to the best of their abilities and avoid wastage at all costs. Particularly he had mentioned  “freshwater shouldn’t be used for washing vehicles at this time of crisis”
