Senior Sri Lankan Buddhist monk “Athipoojaya Niyangoda Vijithasiri Himipanan” has pointed due to some activities being carried out by handful number of Sri Lankan Buddhist monks, the whole Bikku community within Sri Lanka has increasingly become scrutinized and heavily criticized by the wider Sri Lankan society. The Monk has further pointed out “It is the manner at which these incidents to activities said to have been carried out by certain Buddhist monks, being infused into the social domain, particularly through use of social media platforms is what is deeply concerning.
Because indeed according to Buddhist code of conduct and virtues some actions to activities are indeed considered as unethical to unacceptable and so inadvertently they shouldn’t be acted upon by Buddhist monks under no Circumstances.
Particularly due to present day social economics and various other hardships everyone is going through, the situation has become more prevalent.
Monk had made these comments when he was attending the gathering of western province’s leading Buddhist monks held at Horana Ancient Olaboduwa Great Temple (Raja Maha Vihara).
In his own words he haver said “
“Certain media outlets to social media platforms themselves are intentionally attempting to paint a very negative picture of certain activities to actions carried out by a handful number of Buddhist monks and they attempt to provide a great deal of publicity for what had taken place. This is very tragic from both points of Buddha Sasana to whole Buddhist monks communities prospective considering their critical role within Sri Lankan society. Also due to the country’s financial to political instability, these events have taken place to be reported with unusual publicity given to them“.
It has also been reported participating in a catholic prayer conducted at Ragama, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has commented “Politicians need to understand religion is not a tool that can be used to attain political power. And such attempts to act are not welcomed by the Sri Lankan wider society“.
