Canary Islands—Needs British Tourists (authorities pleads) to end-Tourist Hate Campaign

It’s been reported that officials within the Canary Islands have pleaded with their community to put an end to their tourismphobia, as the island desperately needs the continual arrival of foreign tourists for the growth of its economy. It has been reported recently that there have been continual protests against tourists arriving in large numbers on the island, particularly from Britain.

Native islanders are demanding from the authorities that they safeguard the future of permanent residence and bring in regulations preventing tourists, especially, from applying for permanent visas.

Despite the demands of the locals and permanent residents, Canary Islands tourism minister Jessica de Leon said that “for the sake of and well-being of the island economy, they need to put aside these protests and realize the importance of the income being bought through tourism arrivals.

Jessica de Leon has stated that tourism accounts for 35% of the island’s GDP. We are well aware of the fact that tourism does indeed collide with residence frequently. We must tackle these problems head-on, as it’s been known that they’ve created a lot of problems in regards to housing. The tourism phobia is starting to hurt some critical sectors of the island economy, and officials are quite worried about that. For the past couple of months, there have been a lot of protests organized against the arrival of tourists on the island in unprecedentedly large numbers.

Native Islanders have seen holding banners of oppositions mentioning “Canaries are no longer a paradise” and “The Canaries are not for sale”.

It has been reported on average Canary Islands receive an annual tourism arrival of well over 13 million visitors, the majority of whom are from Britain. The native islanders and permanent residence are complaining that mass tourism arrivals have led to the gradual destruction of many natural locations and have caused pollution and environmental degradation throughout the island. The Canary Islanders are demanding from the authorities that they restrict the availability of rooms within hotels and also put limitations on the construction of new buildings relating to housing tourists. They further stress that the indiscriminate influx of tourists puts an unnecessary strain on locals lives.

It has been reported that President Dolores Corujo has been quoted as saying that the island’s tourism market should steer away from budget Brits and instead focus on “higher quality holidaymakers”.
