SL Medical Consultants Shortage CRISIS—Solution-to bring foreign Consultants-not practical or feasible.
Today health Ministry was forced to go on the offensive dismissing rumors’ surrounding over that the ministry is planning on bringing in consultant medical specialist particularly from India to address countries own medical specialist consultants are moving a broad in the midst of economic crisis. Particularly hi amount of Taxes being imposed on medical specialists income.
This has been confirmed by Deputy Director General of the health ministry Dr. G. Wijesuriya stating ” it is absolutely in no way feasible or practical for the government to take such bold decision”.
Dr. G. Wijesuriya further clarified that government has taken extra necessary steps in minimizing the situation becoming even further escalated by
- Elevating retirement age of consultant medical doctors.
- Already retired consultant doctors are allowed to join the government service under contract basis – till suitable consultant doctors are appointed.
Also government is in the process of prioritizing training and training opportunities provided for existing medical doctors work within government sector to advance their skills to relevant specialist field levels.
But however he pointed out for a medical doctor to be properly trained and to be certified as a Specialist it takes on average five or more years. So that implies there will be a backlog of delay for the current medical specialists crisis to be averted with in near future.
