52000 Families Affected — Crops of 33 000 Acres Lost…Drought Continues…

According to most resent data published by Centre for Disaster Management it’s been revealed that well over 52000 families spanning across 6 regions with in Sri Lanka has been severely affected by the drought taking place. The exact figures been released as follows

  • 51 641 Families
  • 171781 Individuals
  • Districts within Northern province are the most affected
  • Within Northern province 75165 in individuals.
  • Within Eastern province 63316 individuals.
  • Within Rathnapura District district 14116 individuals
  • North eastern Province 10043 individuals
  • Hambanthota district 7512 individuals
  • Badulla and Monaragala districts 1809 individuals

 

It is be noted within the Plonnaruwa districts Dimbulagala no: 216 Ella Wewa Jayasri gama, people are finding it nearly impossible to allocate adequate amounts of water to sustain their very basic necessities.

It has also been reported that by agriculture and agriculture insurance board that Paddy fields accounting for 32815 acres spanned across 19 districts has been lost due to prevailing drought. Out of which majority located within kurunagala district amounts to be 10 231 acres.

Within Walawa region it is estimated 10117 acres of paddy fields being lost due to draught. additionally with in regions as Mahawa, Rathnapura, Trinco, Ampara, Batticaloa, Puththlam and Mathara regions has also reported severe loss of paddy fields due to drought.
